Fantastic Margaritas and Where to Find Them in Hong Kong

Margaritas are always my tipple of choice, but they are not the easiest to make. It is quite difficult to balance the flavours, the juices and the tequila – and I would know after many failed experiments. The cocktail either ends up too sour, too sweet or too salty. After three years in Hong Kong, I have finally nailed down five restaurants and bars which serve perfectly shaken margaritas by either recreating the classics with the perfect dosage of lime or by giving the drink an exciting twist.
Behold my fantastic five margaritas and where to find them!

#1. Tommy’s Margarita at Commissary

This new joint recently opened its doors a couple of months ago in the luxurious shopping mall Pacific Place in Admiralty. Commissary serves tasty Southern California and Mexican dishes for which I’d recommend the Tuna Tostada which is seasoned to perfection and their fish tacos. I was also pleasantly surprised by their Tommy’s Margarita cocktail. The classic concoction has the ideal zing finish I search for. I’ll dare to say it was the best margarita I had so far in Hong Kong.

#2. Dove at Rummin’ Tings

I have adored Rummin’ Tings since it opened back in 2014. The vibe, the food, and the staff are a delight! On top of that, they serve a tasty margarita with a little twist, named the Dove. This cocktail has an extra tang factor with the addition of grapefruit cordial, giving it a gorgeous pink colour.

#3. Uncaged at Ophelia

Ever since Ophelia’s debut in buzzing Wan Chai, it was an instant hit becoming the hippest bar in Hong Kong. And how could it not be? Designed by mastermind Ashley Sutton, this immersive space is inspired by ancient Chinese opium bars, fully adorned with peacock feathers, bird cages and women lounging on the bar. It is the stuff of dreams! What is more, their cocktails aren’t short of imagination either. Their drinks are a show on their own including their signature margarita-inspired tipple. Titled Uncaged (originally Cheongsam: the iconic Chinese dress), it is a beautiful drink with balanced flavours served in a bird cage with a white light beaming underneath the glass.

#4. Classic Margarita at Agave

This big Mexican eatery not only has great margaritas at a good price but also offers a great buy-one-get-one free Happy Hour deal until late. Agave is usually my go-to place for nicely prepared margaritas which never fail to disappoint. Also, they have a top selection of quality tequilas to choose from.

#5. Wide variety of Margaritas at Coyote

The Tex Mex joint is my second go-to place as it has a vast menu offering various types of margaritas. So if you’re in the mood for something different but still want to feel a good kick, Coyote is the place to go. My recommendation would be the firecracker: this one packs a punch full of chilli!
